Coffee Questions
I have always exclusively roasted roast organic beans and will continue to do so! My choice to exclusively roast organic coffee beans is often motivated by a combination of health, environmental, and ethical considerations.
1. Health Benefits
No Synthetic Pesticides or Fertilizers: Organic coffee is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers. This reduces the risk of consuming harmful residues and contributes to a cleaner, healthier coffee experience. Reduced Exposure to Harmful Chemicals: By avoiding synthetic chemicals, organic coffee minimizes exposure to potentially harmful substances, which can be particularly important for sensitive individuals.
2. Environmental Benefits
Sustainable Farming Practices: Organic coffee farming promotes sustainable practices such as crop rotation, composting, and natural pest control. This helps maintain soil health, reduces erosion, and conserves water.
Reduced Pollution: Organic farming avoids chemical runoff, which can pollute water sources and harm local ecosystems. By using natural fertilizers and pest control methods, organic coffee helps protect biodiversity.
Soil Health: Organic practices enhance soil fertility and structure through natural composting and reduced use of synthetic inputs. Healthy soil supports more resilient coffee plants and reduces the need for chemical interventions.
3. Ethical Considerations
Fair Labor Practices: Many organic coffee producers also adhere to fair trade principles, ensuring that farmers receive fair wages and work under good conditions. While organic certification itself does not guarantee fair trade, many organic brands support these ethical practices.
Support for Small Farmers: Organic coffee farming often involves small-scale producers who are committed to sustainable practices.
To keep your freshly roasted coffee fresh for as long as possible, consider these tips:
- Store in an Airtight Container: Use an opaque, airtight container to protect against light, air, and moisture. Glass or ceramic containers with tight seals work well.
- Keep it Cool: Store your coffee in a cool, dry place.
- Avoid Freezing: While some people freeze coffee to prolong freshness, it can cause moisture issues when thawing. If you do freeze, only take out small portions at a time.
- Grind Just Before Brewing: Whole beans stay fresh longer than ground coffee, so grind your beans right before brewing to maximize flavor.
The differences between lighter and darker roasted coffee are due to the roasting temperature the beans are roasted at how long the heat is applied to the beans over the total roasting time.
Lighter Roast coffee:
Flavor: Lighter roasts tend to have more pronounced acidity and a brighter flavor profile. They often retain more of the original coffee bean's characteristics, including fruity, floral, or herbal notes.
Color: They are light brown and usually have no oil on the surface.
Caffeine Content: Light roasts typically have slightly more caffeine than dark roasts, as some caffeine is lost during the longer roasting process of dark roasts.
Darker Roast coffee:
Flavor: Dark roasts have a bolder, deeper, rich flavor that can have notes of chocolate, caramel, or smokiness. The temperature application ad duration of the roasting process change some of the original bean flavors relative to lighter roasts.
Color: They are dark brown to nearly black and often have a shiny, oily surface due to oils released during the longer time spent roasting
Caffeine Content: They usually contain less caffeine per weight than light roasts,
but the difference is minimal. Ultimately, the choice between lighter and darker roasts comes down to personal preference in taste and flavor. That’s why we roast our beans at 5 distinct roast levels:
Light, Medium, Full-City, Dark, and Espresso!
